As part of the 2021 Brisbane RHD Workshop, Kylie McKenna, Manager, QLD RHD Program presents an overview of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease in Queensland, the number of people living with the disease, where they live, and how the control program works with clients in the state.

Case based discussion (RHD diagnosis and management, including secondary prophylaxis)

As part of the 2021 Brisbane RHD Workshop, Dr William Wang, Cardiologist, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane, and Conjoint Associate Professor of Medicine UQ, presents on how to determine the people who require primary and secondary prevention of acute rheumatic fever in the primary care setting. He also discusses appropriate strategies to improve/maximise delivery of secondary prophylaxis in the practice.

Kids hip hop to stop painful skin infections in the Kimberley region. Telethon Kids Institute researchers have launched the Hip Hop 2 SToP video featuring school kids participating in their SToP Trial project designed to see, treat and prevent skin infections in WA’s Kimberley region.

This poster and video have been developed to provide an overview of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease for people working in schools. School staff are well placed to assist children aged 5-14 years, their families and communities to prevent and manage these conditions.

Untreated sore throats and skin sores can lead to acute rheumatic fever, then to rheumatic heart disease, then to open heart surgery in high-risk children. Preventing sore throats and skin sores, and careful management of acute rheumatic fever prevents rheumatic heart disease.
