A message from Apunipima Cape York Health Council - Our mob in Napranum have come together to deliver some important health messages around Rheumatic Heart Disease. Rheumatic Heart Disease starts with a Strep A germ. Some of the best ways to stop the Strep A germ is to wash your hands and body with soap and water and wash your clothes, beddings and towels regularly.

ARF & RHD Can be Prevented

A message from Apunipima Cape York Health Council - “You’re not born with Rheumatic Heart Disease, it’s something that can be prevented”. You can prevent Rheumatic Heart Disease by washing your hands and body and going to the clinic if you have a sore throat or skin sore.

Healthier Families for Future Generations - a film by the Apunipima Cape York Health Council. Acute Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease is common in kids and teens across the Cape. It starts with a Strep A germ which can infect the throat (sore throats) and the skin (skin sores). Without treatment (antibiotics) these sore throats and skin sores can develop into ARF & RHD. If you or your child has a sore throat or skin sore go to the clinic to get checked out.

A patient's guide to getting a Bicillin injection

Young people aged between 5 to 14 years are at the highest risk of developing an initial episode of ARF. Patients identified as being at risk of ARF recurrences and the development of or worsening RHD require frequent prophylactic treatment with penicillin antibiotics, for at least ten years. Benzathine benzylpenicillin (Bicillin L-A) intramuscular injection is administered at least every four weeks. These injections can be extremely painful and distressing for children.

As part of the 2021 Brisbane RHD Workshop, Paediatric Cardiologist, Dr Robert Justo, Director Queensland Paediatric Cardiac Service, presents on diagnosis and management of acute rheumatic fever; using the ARF diagnosis calculator app and a prepared case study to highlight how to use the calculator as a diagnostic tool that can assist clinicians.

Women and girls with RHD and pre-pregnancy care planning for woman with RHD

As part of the 2021 Brisbane RHD Workshop, Dr Cecelia O Brien (Townsville Hospital). Obstetricians are experienced in caring for pregnant women with RHD. This presentation helps clinicians with developing a management plan for a woman with rheumatic heart disease while incorporating realistic goals with patients.
