A seminar on the prevention of rheumatic heart disease has highlighted the importance of early detection among Indigenous populations.

Christian James of RHDAustralia says the disease is highly prevalent among First Nations people in the NT, who rank among the most at-risk in the world.

Mr James says the seminar provided information for better diagnosing and managing acute rheumatic fever and heart disease.

He says the diseases are preventable.
