Primordial prevention

In the context of acute rheumatic fever (a non-suppurative complication of A Streptococcus infection) primordial and primary prevention would involve:

  • eliminating the risk factors associated with group A Streptococcus infection – primordial prevention
  • preventing infection, and perhaps colonisation, with group A Streptococcus and the subsequent development of acute rheumatic fever – primary prevention.

Primordial prevention aims to stop the development of risk factors for a disease in a population. In the case of acute rheumatic fever/rheumatic heart disease, primordial prevention means preventing the acquisition of group A Streptococcus infection through implementing actions and measures that target environmental, economic, social and behavioural conditions, cultural patterns of living that are known to increase the risk of [group A Streptococcus infection].

Because of the challenges and costs involved in implementing effective secondary and tertiary prevention programs, the ultimate goal in acute rheumatic fever/rheumatic heart disease prevention must remain the elimination of disease.
